Marvin is currently a Doctoral Student at New York University and Psychotherapist in Private Practice. He also holds a role as School Response Clinician – Consultant at NYC Department of Education.
Marvin completed their Master of Social Work degree in 2016 from New York University. The decision to pursue graduate training in social work came from their time spent in the classroom through Teach For America; their ability and passion for building relationships far exceeded their skillset for lesson planning.
While earning their MSW, Marvin’s focus was on the current approaches for treating trauma. During their first-year internship, Marvin received training to meet clients’ social-emotional needs and practiced cognitive behavioral therapy as a modality to treat maladaptive thought patterns that contributed to emotional difficulties, depression, and anxiety. Post-graduation, he accepted a full-time role at Harlem Children’s Zone, as a school-based social worker and a part-time psychotherapist position at Brooklyn Center for Psychotherapy. Both organizations afforded him the opportunity to receive clinical supervision; HCZ homed in on clinical skills necessary for working with child and adolescent trauma, while at BCP, Marvin trained with supervising psychologist to provide therapeutic services to adults diagnosed with mood and personality disorders.
Marvin has completed and attended training in the following: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Art Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Play Therapy, Positive Psychology, and Psychodynamic Therapy.
